We finally got the opportunity to tackle Bearfence Loop Rock Scramble together. The mile marker for Bearfence is 56, a short drive from the Swift Run Entrance. If everyone parks thoughtfully, I would gather 12-15 vehicles can safely park in the lot, but they do allow vehicles to park off in the grass as long as your vehicle is not on the Skyline Drive. This is a 1.1 mile blue blazed Trail, and after the scramble, you will loop to the Appalachian Trail to finish.
We began our trek at 5:45 am. There were a few people in front of us heading up as well. The initial climb is up a semi stair case, and you will intersect with the Appalachian Trail approximately .15 miles in. Here is where you can decide to go right and go up the backside to a viewpoint on the Trail, or go straight and do the scramble. We headed straight and began the scramble.

I for one have never attempted a rock scramble, so I was a little apprehensive- Brother has done multiple so I knew I was in good hands. We utilized the 3 points of contact method- always have 3 limbs secured on the rock to make sure you are stable. After a few bouts of doubt from me, we made it to the summit and enjoyed the 360 views of the Shenandoah Valley to the west and the Piedmont to the east. It was a perfect spring morning to do so. We continued another bit of scrambling (I decided to slide down some of the rocks) and hit the blue blazed spur trail back to the AT and parking lot.
I would rate this trail as easy to moderate- Easy for those who are experienced, moderate for those with apprehension and perhaps a fear of heights. Some of the rocks are worn from foot traffic (to be expected once you see the amazing views!!) We wore sturdy boots and took our time, and we had a great hike.
Please note there is a fee to enter Shenandoah National Park. Seven day passes are $30 and an annual pass is $55. Please also note the park is cashless entry now- please bring a credit/debit card for payment and to shop at the Waysides and Gift Shops.
