Shenandoah National Park Appalachian Trail- Rock Cabin to Timber Hollow

January 2, 2026

Today’s adventure was supposed to be Rock Cabin (mile marker 48) to Stony Man
trailhead (mile marker 41) but needed to cut it short- I ended up catching the flu the day
after Christmas, and I wanted to pace myself for the next few hikes. We ended today’s
trek at Timber Hollow (Mile marker 43)
I was excited about this section of our journey because we were going to loop around
Hawksbill Summit (the highest peak in the Park) and I knew we were going to have epic
views of the valley below and of the summit. (I have completed Hawksbill Summit
numerous times, but never this section) It was a nice, level ascent and then we started
down to the scree field (similar to Blackrock Summit in the Southern District) this was
the first hike foul- I tripped and fell on a rock and busted up my shin pretty good but we
kept going. We reached Crescent Rock Trailhead and took a short snack and water
break. Even being under the weather, I was feeling fine. We continued our trek and
came across one of the numerous springs and one was completely frozen over. He
ended up crossing it, but I elected to go a bit off trail to circumvent the ice patch. We
kept an even pace to get to the parking area.

Stats- 3.54 miles/746’ elevation gain
Critter recap- deer and squirrels
