Today’s journey started at Simmons Gap (mile marker 73) to Smith Roach Gap (mile marker 68). We started a steady, yet manageable ascent to Powell Gap. We were greeted by several deer who were not concerned with us traipsing through. We made it to a small, rocky outcrop at the 2.6-mile mark and caught the beginning of the sunrise facing the Piedmont and Lydia Mountain. We made it to Powell Gap where we had a short snack and water break and crossed over Skyline Drive. We noticed the change in temperature significantly dropped at this point; the wind wasn’t as bad on the Piedmont side but once we got to the valley side, it was noticeable. Come to find out, we were in a high wind warning and had absolutely no idea! We ascended the very well-maintained path to Smith Roach Gap parking.
